Mathematics is not just about numbers—it’s about understanding patterns, solving real-world problems, and making reasoned decisions. This course is designed to develop key mathematical proficiencies: understanding, fluency, problem-solving, and reasoning.

This course develops key mathematical skills: understanding, fluency, problem-solving, and reasoning. Integrated across Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability, these proficiencies empower students to think critically and apply math to real-world scenarios.

Students will:

• Understand relationships between graphs, equations, and trigonometric ratios.

• Apply index laws, use scientific notation, and calculate areas and surface areas.

• Solve practical problems involving right prisms, trigonometry, and similar figures.

• Develop logical reasoning to analyze data, evaluate media reports, and sketch linear graphs.

By building mathematical confidence and problem-solving skills, this course prepares students for both academic and everyday challenges.

In Level 8, students enhance their arithmetic skills with natural numbers, integers, and rational numbers, using and without technology. They work with indices, investigate decimal and fraction representations, and solve problems involving ratios, percentages, and rates. They also explore some irrational numbers like square roots and fractions of π (pi).

Students transition from numbers to algebra, learning to expand, factorize, simplify, and substitute algebraic expressions. They plot linear relations, solve linear equations, and apply linear models. They also convert units for area and volume, solve time-related problems, and calculate perimeters, areas, and volumes of various shapes.

Students study congruence and transformations to understand properties of plane shapes, and use logical connectives and Venn diagrams to calculate probabilities. They learn that probabilities range from 0 to 1. Additionally, they collect and analyze data, using digital technology to explore variability and the impact of outliers on averages.

In year 8, students interact with peers, teachers, and community members in both face-to-face and online settings. They learn in various contexts, including school, local, and global environments.

Students engage with a wide range of texts for enjoyment and learning, including media texts, novels, non-fiction, poetry, and performances. They develop skills in interpreting and evaluating texts, understanding how context, purpose, and audience influence them.

Students explore diverse literary genres with complex plots and characters, and informative texts with specialized content. They create imaginative, informative, and persuasive texts, such as narratives, reports, and discussions, and begin crafting literary analyses.
